The largest alpine lake in the world, lake tahoe is one of america’s treasures. Mark twain called Lake Tahoe “the fairest picture the whole earth affords.” The eighth deepest lake in the world and second deepest in the U.S., Lake tahoe has an average depth of 980 feet with its deepest point being 1,645 feet. It holds approximately 10 trillion gallons, enough to cover california to a depth of 14.5 inches. Highlights include Zephyr Cove and Sand Harbor State Park, which has beautiful beaches and hosts the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival in late summer. Lake tahoe also offers many recreational and entertainment opportunities, including skiing in winter, golf and water sports in summer and exciting nightlife at its stateline casino resorts. Lake Tahoe is 32 miles southwest of Reno/Sparks on the Nevada/California state line.
